Thus, were the
life-giving spirit to enliven the inanimate elements, such as the land, the air, the sea, or the flames, vivifying them, making them suddenly spring to life, and move violently or with great force, thereby inadvertently wreaking great havoc, causing powerful quakes, kindling mighty stormwinds or large waves, and igniting all-consuming fires, it would therefore, to the self-same extent, become a deadening spirit as well: Hence also the
mortification of the flesh, frequently mentioned by the Apostle Paul, in relation to the Holy Ghost.
